The United States has announced an additional $31 million to aid Nepal’s recovery from severe flooding, as stated by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker during a meeting with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal in New York. Hooker conveyed U.S. sympathies for those affected, particularly the families of approximately 70 missing Americans.
The new financial assistance includes provisions to collaborate with Congress to allocate $10 million for the construction of permanent, custom-built bridges to replace vital transportation infrastructure damaged by the floods, with sourcing expected from a U.S. company. Additionally, $8 million is designated for enhancing water, sanitation and hygiene services, as well as support for shelter, protection, livelihoods, and winterization for the impacted communities.
Furthermore, $13 million is earmarked for American-made drones intended to bolster future disaster recovery operations. This latest support package raises the total U.S. contribution for Nepal’s flood response and recovery efforts to over $36 million. The State Department affirmed its commitment to closely collaborate with the Nepalese government to ascertain and provide further assistance as needed.
