Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is set to witness the swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Indian Prime Minister on Saturday.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha confirmed that Prime Minister Dahal will visit New Delhi to attend the oath-taking ceremony.
The foreign ministry is currently finalizing the delegates who will accompany the prime minister to the Indian capital city.
Modi’s assumption of office marks a historic third consecutive term after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats in the recent elections.
He becomes only the second leader to win a third term, following in the footsteps of founding Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
In 2014, then-Prime Minister Sushila Koirala attended Modi’s first oath-taking ceremony when he was elected prime minister.
The Indian government has extended invitations to heads of government from other SAARC countries for the swearing-in ceremony.
Prime Minister Dahal congratulated Modi on his election victory earlier this week. In a statement, Dahal noted the successful completion of the world’s largest democratic exercise, with enthusiastic participation from the people of India. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party secured 240 seats in the 543-member lower house.
Additionally, Prime Minister Dahal and Modi held a telephone conversation. Modi expressed his appreciation, stating, “Happy to speak with PM @cmprachanda. Thanked him for his warm wishes.” Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the deep-rooted and multifaceted partnership between India and Nepal, aiming to sustain positive momentum in their relations. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli, along with other Nepali leaders, also congratulated Modi on his election.
