Narendra Modi was sworn in for a historic third consecutive term as India’s Prime Minister on June 9, 2024.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office.

Modi, is only the second Indian Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this feat. His Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had previously won by landslides in 2014 and 2019, failed to secure an outright majority in the latest national election.

However, Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition won enough seats to form a government, with him at the helm. Notably, this is the first time the BJP under Modi has needed support from regional allies to govern after a decade of commanding a parliamentary majority.

During the swearing-in ceremony, several South Asian leaders attended, including Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.

Upon reaching New Delhi-based Indira Gandhi International Airport today, PM Prachanda was received by special representatives of the Government of India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, India.

Following the swearing-in ceremony of Modi, Prime Minister Prachanda will meet his Indian counterpart, according to the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by his daughter and private secretary Ganga Dahal, Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Padam Giri, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and other senior government officials during the visit. He is scheduled to return home on Monday.
