Tourist numbers are on the rise in Pokhara, the renowned capital of tourism in Nepal, as the Nepali New Year approaches. Both domestic and international visitors are flocking to the city, revitalizing tourism-related businesses and activities. Optimism is palpable among tourism entrepreneurs as they witness the surge in tourist traffic.
Lakshman Subedi, President of the Pokhara Hotel Association, notes a significant uptick in hotel occupancy, with rates reaching 50 percent recently and peaking at 60 percent on Fridays and Saturdays. Anticipating a surge during the New Year festivities, Subedi predicts occupancy rates to soar to 90 percent.

This resurgence comes after a sluggish period during December and January, typically considered the off-season for tourism, when hotel occupancy plummeted to less than ten percent. However, the upcoming “19th Phewa New Year Festival” at Lakeside, a popular tourist spot, is expected to draw even more visitors, further boosting tourism.
To incentivize travelers, a 30 percent discount on hotel accommodations has been introduced for the festival period. Despite the current influx, there’s still room for growth, as Pokhara’s hotels can host up to 40,000 tourists daily, while the current daily influx stands at around 20,000.
While hoteliers celebrate the return of tourism, other business sectors in Pokhara are hopeful for a similar revival shortly.
