In a landmark visit aimed at bolstering bilateral relations, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra oversaw the signing of multiple agreements, including in the fields of culture and tourism, during a high-level meeting in Bangkok on Thursday.

This marks Prime Minister Oli’s first official visit to Thailand, following an invitation extended by his Thai counterpart.

The two leaders convened at a Thai government building, where PM Shinawatra formally welcomed PM Oli. The delegation accompanying the Nepali Prime Minister included Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Economic Advisor Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada, Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal, and Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai.

Following their discussions, six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged between institutions, non-governmental organizations, and business entities of both nations. A key agreement focused on enhancing collaboration in cultural and tourism sectors, signaling a shared commitment to deepen people-to-people ties and economic partnerships.

During a joint press conference, PM Oli and PM Shinawatra highlighted expanded cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, investment, and sustainable development. “This visit opens a new chapter in Nepal-Thailand relations, grounded in mutual respect and shared aspirations,” PM Oli remarked.

As part of his itinerary, PM Oli attended a luncheon hosted by PM Shinawatra and later held a courtesy meeting with Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn at the royal palace. The discussions emphasized strengthening diplomatic and cultural bonds between the two nations.

PM Oli’s visit, which is supposed to conclude on April 5, underscores Nepal’s proactive engagement with Southeast Asia and aligns with broader efforts to diversify international partnerships. The agreements signed during the trip are expected to pave the way for increased tourism exchanges, cultural programs, and institutional collaboration.

This historic diplomatic engagement reaffirms the commitment of both nations to fostering enduring cooperation in an evolving global landscape.
