Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Arju Rana Deuba, met with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during his visit to Nepal.
The talks, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on a wide range of issues including bilateral relations, economic and development cooperation, and ongoing projects.
One of the key topics discussed was the need to enhance air connectivity between Nepal and India. Minister Dr. Rana requested that the Government of India consider opening additional air routes to Nepal, highlighting the challenges faced by Bhairahawa and Pokhara airports, which currently rely solely on the Simara route for incoming flights. Nepal has proposed new routes through Nepalgunj and Mahendranagar to address these operational issues.
In addition, Dr. Rana discussed India’s plan to establish a laboratory for testing the quality of vegetables and fruits imported through the Nepal-India border, which is aimed at improving food safety and trade efficiency.
The meeting also covered the progress of the Pancheshwar Project, noting that most issues have been resolved, with the remaining technical matters to be addressed by a dedicated group. Other topics included the release of water from the Tanakpur Dam canal, flood control efforts for the Badganga and Rapti rivers, and the opening of the Darchula bridge.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of ongoing discussions on trade and transportation, and Minister Dr. Rana expressed gratitude to the Government of India for their assistance in rescuing and supporting the victims of the Jajarkot earthquake.
