CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal. On Sunday, President Ram Chandra Poudel made the appointment by Article 76(2) of the Constitution.

Oli’s claim to the prime ministership was backed by the UML, the Nepali Congress, and other parties. Following the failure of Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to secure a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Friday, President Poudel called for submissions for the prime minister’s position from those with the support of two or more parties, as stipulated by Article 76(2).

On Friday night, Oli responded swiftly, presenting his claim with the support of 166 lawmakers at the presidential palace, Shital Niwas.

Article 76(2) of the Constitution authorizes the President to appoint a member of the House of Representatives who can secure a majority with the support of two or more parties.

The President’s Office indicated that the decision followed necessary studies, including the submission of claims that demonstrated a majority support led by the Congress party.

The newly appointed Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, is scheduled to be sworn in at 11 am on Monday.
