Second BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers Retreat Commences in New Delhi

Nepali Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal is currently in New Delhi, leading a delegation to the Second BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat taking place on July 11-12, 2024.

According to the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the retreat will focus on enhancing regional cooperation and partnerships in areas of mutual interest within the BIMSTEC framework.

During the event, the Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegations from BIMSTEC Member States will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will host the retreat, which will provide an informal setting for the Foreign Ministers of BIMSTEC countries to discuss broadening and deepening cooperation in sectors such as security, connectivity, trade and investment, and people-to-people contacts in the Bay of Bengal region.

The first BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat was held in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 17, 2023. BIMSTEC, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, unites seven countries from South and Southeast Asia for multifaceted cooperation.

Foreign Secretary Lamsal is accompanied by a senior official from the Ministry and is scheduled to return to Kathmandu on July 13, 2024.
