In a momentous endeavor commemorating 50 years of diplomatic ties between Nepal and the Republic of Korea (RoK), a collaborative expedition is poised to conquer the towering summit of Mt. Jugal. This impressive peak stands at a majestic height of 6,591 meters.
The joint expedition comprises three Nepali climbers and seven Korean mountaineers. Their mission is to ascend the formidable Mt. Jugal, situated in the Sindhupalchok region. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has officially announced this historic undertaking.
Mt. Jugal holds profound significance beyond its mountaineering feat. It symbolizes the enduring friendship between Nepal and the RoK. As the nearest peak to Kathmandu, it provides an ideal backdrop for this collaborative venture.
The initiative for this expedition was driven by the concerted efforts of the NMA, Nepal Tourism Board, and the Jugal Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchok.
Mr. Mohan Lamsal, the NMA’s general secretary, expressed confidence that this maiden ascent would significantly boost tourism in Nepal. It underscores the country’s commitment to adventure tourism and the exploration of new mountaineering opportunities.
Previously restricted, Mt. Jugal was officially opened for climbing by the Nepali government on April 11, 2023. This decision reflects Nepal’s dedication to fostering adventure tourism and expanding avenues for mountaineering enthusiasts.
Notably, alongside Mt. Jugal, five other peaks in the Jugal mountain range have also been made accessible for mountaineering activities.
The joint expedition will be led by renowned Korean mountaineer and honorary Nepali citizen, Aum Hong Gill, who represents the South Korean contingent. On the Nepali side, distinguished climber and NMA’s first vice-president, Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, will lead the team.
Adding to the grandeur of the expedition, a group of 50 South Korean trekkers will accompany the team. Their presence will further enhance cultural exchange and camaraderie between the two nations.
As the climbers set their sights on the majestic summit of Mt. Jugal, they embarked on a historic journey that celebrated friendship, adventure, and the spirit of exploration.
