Foreign Minister Shrestha Urges Action on Border Issues with Chinese Leader

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, currently on an official visit to China, has emphasized cooperation with the Chinese side to address challenges faced by residents along the Nepal-China borders.

During his meeting with Wang Junzheng, the Secretary of the Communist Party of China for the Xizang autonomous region on Friday, the Deputy Prime Minister sought collaboration on several fronts including, arrangements for utilizing pastureland in border areas, facilitating entry permits for Nepali containers and, electrification in Nepal’s Highlands: Cooperation to enhance electrification in highland regions of Nepal.

Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha recalled an agreement to resume 14 traditional transits between Nepal and China during his meeting with Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. He expected the Xizang province government to play a facilitating role in implementing this understanding.

In a proactive move, he extended an invitation to the Xizang government, investors, and the business community to participate in the Nepal Investment Summit scheduled for April 28-29. Furthermore, he urged the Chinese side to consider resuming the Kathmandu-Lhasa Bus Service.

Highlighting Nepal’s economic transformation, Shrestha emphasized the government’s commitment to people’s well-being through economic empowerment. Trust-building, political stability, and development are essential for progress, he asserted.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude for China’s ongoing support during Nepal’s crises and recalled productive meetings with Wang Huning (Chairperson of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) and Foreign Minister Yi in Beijing, aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties.
