Everest Expedition Preparation: Worship to Ensure the Safety of Climbers

With the onset of spring season, preparations for mountaineering expeditions to Mt Everest have gained momentum.

A team of 10 ‘icefall doctors’ has set out for the Base Camp to establish a safe climbing route for mountaineers, according to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC). Committee Chairperson Lamakaji Sherpa stated that securing ropes along the Khumbu Icefall is part of SPCC’s responsibilities.

The team, led by experienced climbers Aangsarki Sherpa and Dawajangbu Sherpa, left Namche carrying the necessary equipment. Their task involves fixing ropes, installing ladders, and marking a secure path up to Camp II. This work, assigned to SPCC by the Department of Tourism since 1997, is expected to take around 20 days, depending on weather conditions.

Before starting their work, the ‘icefall doctors’ performed a Buddhist ritual to appease the Mountain Deities. This customary Puja, conducted by local Lama Gurus, is believed to ensure the safety of climbers.

SPCC charges foreign climbers USD 600 per person for this service, which includes route maintenance and environmental conservation efforts. Chair Sherpa emphasized the risky nature of the icefall doctors’ work, stating that a successful Everest expedition would not be possible without their contribution.

With favorable weather conditions, tourism entrepreneurs expect a significant increase in climbers this season compared to previous years. The SPCC team is also focused on environmental conservation, while local Sherpa guides have undergone special training to assist climbers.

“Mountaineering tourism is crucial for Nepal’s economy, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and well-managed climbing season,” said Sherpa.

Preparations include route construction, sanitation measures, and communication facilities at the Base Camp and higher camps. As expedition teams from around the world prepare to take on Mt Everest, Nepal is gearing up to host another successful climbing season.
