Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has underscored the need to address evolving dimensions of national security and prepare for emerging challenges.

Speaking at an event at Singha Durbar marking the 24th anniversary of the National Security Council Secretariat, Prime Minister Oli highlighted that alongside traditional security concerns, rapid advancements in information technology and its misuse have intensified security risks. Cybercrime, transnational crime, climate change, drug abuse, and the misuse of social media have contributed to growing vulnerabilities.

He emphasized that shifting regional and global security dynamics necessitate timely assessment and strategic decision-making to mitigate their impact on Nepal’s national security. Stressing the importance of coordination, he urged political parties, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard the nation’s independence, sovereignty, geographical integrity, and unity under a “whole-of-nation” approach.

The Constitution of Nepal, in Part 28, Article 266(1), mandates the formation of a National Security Council under the Prime Minister’s leadership to formulate policies on national security and defense. The council is also responsible for advising the government on the mobilization or regulation of the Nepali Army.

Established on Falgun 27, 2058 BS, the National Security Council Secretariat has played a crucial role in facilitating council operations, offering strategic recommendations, and preparing security assessment reports.
