Bindeshwari Shah, Nepal’s first female ambassador and a trailblazer in the nation’s diplomatic history, has passed away on Thursday.
Appointed as Nepal’s ambassador to India in May 1956, Shah became the first woman to hold such a prestigious position, marking a significant milestone in the country’s foreign service. Her tenure set an enduring example of female leadership in diplomacy, strengthening Nepal’s international relations.
Shah also held the distinction of being Nepal’s first female joint secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Throughout her career, she served in various international postings, including Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Washington, D.C., representing Nepal with distinction.
Born on February 13, 1933, Shah’s legacy extends beyond her diplomatic achievements. She was the mother of renowned banker Anil Keshari Shah, further cementing her family’s contribution to Nepal’s public and professional life.
Her passing marks the end of an era and a significant loss to Nepal’s diplomatic community.
Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba has paid tribute to the late Shah. Minister Dr Rana reached the late Shah’s residence at Kalimati, Kathmandu this afternoon and paid last respects to the late one by offering a bouquet of flowers.
Shah, who was then in the foreign service, was appointed Nepali ambassador to India in 2044 BS.
