Nepal Celebrates 57th Anniversary of Mitrakunj: Russia’s Ongoing Support Recognized

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha has emphasized Russia’s significant role in Nepal’s development.

During the 57th anniversary celebration of Mitrakunj, an alumni association for Nepalese who studied in the former Soviet Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Shrestha highlighted Russia’s consistent support for Nepal’s economic growth.

He praised Russia’s contributions across various sectors, including economic development, education, science, technology, and infrastructure. Shrestha expressed pride in the enduring relationship between Nepal and Russia, believing that alumni like those from Mitrakunj would further strengthen these ties.

Regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Shrestha advocated for dialogue as the path to resolution. He encouraged leveraging the skills acquired through education in Russia to benefit Nepal’s progress.

Russian Ambassador Aleksei Novikov echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that programs like Mitrakunj foster friendship and enhance bilateral relations between Russia and Nepal.

Nilambar Acharya, the founding president of Mitrakunj, highlighted the role of alumni in cultural exchange and diplomatic connections. Mitrakunj, established in 1967, continues to unite Nepali students who studied in various countries under the former Soviet Union.

With over 7,000 Nepali students having pursued education in Russia and the former Soviet Union, Mitrakunj plays a crucial role. The recent three-day conference saw participation from representatives of Russia, Pakistan, Mongolia, India, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Venin.

Kishor Chapagain, Hospitality Head of the Mitrakunj Conference, affirmed the organization’s commitment to Nepal’s development and international relations. As part of the celebration, Mitrakunj also released a commemorative souvenir.
