Nepali Army General Ganesh Kumar Shrestha has been appointed the new Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres named Shrestha to lead the mission, where he will take over command from Ghanaian two-star General Robert Yaw Affram.
Shrestha has served as commander of Nepal’s Far Western Division and previously led Sector East in South Sudan during a UN peacekeeping deployment, completing 36 years of military service.
He has also worked at Army Headquarters, served as administrative registrar at Birendra Military Hospital, headed the Policy and Planning Directorate and commanded the 16th and 9th brigades.
